Engineering clean, accessible cooling solutions to eliminate post-harvest produce loss across African local markets.
The Challenge at the Market Stall
In Rwanda and across Sub-Saharan Africa, smallholder produce vendors face a devastating daily deadline. Without affordable access to cold storage, high ambient temperatures cause perishable crops—like tomatoes, peppers, and leafy vegetables—to spoil rapidly.
To avoid total loss, market traders are often forced into distress sales by late afternoon, selling remaining inventory below cost. HangaVision was founded to address this challenge directly at the retail point of sale, creating localized cooling systems designed around the real-world operating conditions and cash flows of everyday market traders.
What We Are Building: FreshKeep™
FreshKeep™ is a decentralized, off-grid cold storage innovation currently in active prototyping and testing. Built specifically for informal market environments, our system focuses on three core principles:
Energy Resilience: Designed for off-grid and weak-grid environments using renewable solar power and high-efficiency thermal energy storage.
Targeted Horticultural Cooling: Engineered to maintain stable temperatures suited for vegetables and fruits, extending shelf life from hours to days without damaging produce.
Frictionless Daily Access: Paired with local digital micropayments so traders can access reliable cold storage on a flexible daily basis without heavy upfront capital investment.
Our Mission, Vision & Values
Our Mission: To combat food waste across the farm-to-fork value chain by developing and deploying smart, sustainable, and accessible preservation technologies for communities in Rwanda and beyond.
Our Vision: A continent where post-harvest loss is minimized, vendor livelihoods are enhanced, and communities thrive through the power of sustainable local hardware innovation.
Innovation: Developing practical, field-tested technology engineered for informal market realities.
Sustainability: Building energy-efficient, eco-friendly systems utilizing clean thermal energy storage.
Community Impact: Measuring our success by the kilograms of produce saved and the income retained by vendors.
HangaVision is an engineer-led startup that originated within Rwanda's university maker and innovation ecosystem:
Mid 2025 — Hardware Prototyping (Hanga Hub Rubavu): Completed digital fabrication and hardware prototyping workshops, conducting early thermal modeling for salt-hydrate phase change material (PCM) storage.
Late 2025 — Clean Cooling Knowledge Exchange (ACES Rubilizi): Participated in specialized clean-cooling skills programs and workshops at the Africa Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Cooling and Cold-chain in Kigali, refining the decentralized storage model.
Mid 2026 — Public Prototype Showcase (19th Rwanda AgriShow): Exhibited working proof-of-concept prototypes featuring digital temperature monitoring; recognized as Top-10 finalists in the Israel-Rwanda STEM Power Boot Camp.
Late 2026 & 2027 — Field Validation & Scale (Ziniya Market): Incubated at the Business Incubation & Innovation Hub at Rwanda Polytechnic (RP Kigali Campus), preparing controlled field trials with local produce vendor cooperatives in Kigali.
